Cheat Codes

Anything typed in the chat box that begins with a slash is tried as a command before it is sent. Most commands are harmless conveniences: open a book, roll dice, change your radio channel. A few are cheats: they hand you things or move you about in ways play never would, and using one marks your hero. This page lists all of them as ReBreather understands them, and the mark comes first because it is the part people regret.

The cheater's mark

Every cheat below goes through the same gate. If your hero is not yet marked, the cheat is refused outright, with a message, when any of these hold:

  • you are on a server rather than the Solo Channel;
  • the Book of Options item "Don't let me use cheat codes." is ticked, which it is until you untick it;
  • another player is attacking you.

Otherwise you are asked once, yes or no. Say yes and the command runs and the hero is marked: a tally in the soul file counts cheats used (it stops at 255) and never goes back to zero. The first cheat also tells the server, so the mark is public. Scripts can test it (IF M0), servers advertise a no-cheaters rule, and a marked hero sees no more prompts, ever.

Keep two heroes: one you play online and one you experiment with. The world builder's own test hero is born marked for exactly this reason. Nothing on the rest of this page marks anyone unless the table says so.

Cheats

CommandWhat it does
/innRestores HP and MP to full.
/gimmeOne of every item in the world and every spell. Sets the cheat tally straight to 53.
/give G500Gives you things by letter code: G gold, H HP (a dead hero only by 1), L HP that also revives, M MP, P training points, I12.3 three of item 12 (a pet item hatches a pet), Z7.2 two of trophy 7, S5 spell 5, T9 token 9, J3 takes on mission 3. Counts run 1 to 10000. The mark is applied as soon as the gate passes, even for a code that does nothing.
/take G500Removes the same things with the same letters, except that J still takes the mission on.
/fight, /fight 40, /fight L12Solo Channel, inside a scene: a random encounter, or monster 40, or the first monster of level 12. /fight -40 adds the monster on your side; /fight +40 adds one that hunts your allies and pets.
/scene 12Puts your hero straight into scene 12.
/stepper, /stepper 12Solo Channel only: opens the quest single-stepper, paused at scene 12 if you give one.
/reloadRe-reads the world's files and re-runs the modified-world check.
/monstersShows where monsters roam over the map. Marks the hero unless the soul is a registered (golden) one.

Talking

CommandWhat it does
/clearEmpties the chat window and the input box.
/afk, /afk back in fiveMarks you away and tells people why; a bare /afk reuses your last reason. Your next ordinary line clears it.
/shout textShouts to the whole server. Others can filter shouts out.
/w textWhispers to your whisper target, or to the player last clicked in the player list.
/r textWhispers to the player you last right-clicked in the player list.
/a textAn action line: Ana waves in the chat log, *Ana waves* in a bubble.
/im name, /im serial, /im 3Opens a private message window with a player (by name, or by a listed soul's serial, which is a ReBreather addition), or the gossip window of channel 3.
/tune 3, /tuneTunes your gossip radio to channel 3, or tells you which channel you are on.
/gToggles gossip mode, where your chat goes only to your tuned channel. Refuses until you have tuned.
/eavesdropToggles hearing all public chat in the world, not only nearby chat. A server can forbid it.
/seanceToggles seeing and hearing ghosts.
/bleep word, /unbleep wordAdds a word to your censor list, or takes it off.
/dice, /dice 2d20, /pdiceRolls dice (one digit of dice, up to 32767 sides, default 1d6; no spec repeats the last roll). /dice announces on your channel, /pdice keeps it to yourself.
/bubblesToggles speech bubbles in scenes.
/adminOpens the server admin window.

Books and windows

CommandWhat it does
/help, /help topicThe help viewer, at a topic if you name one.
/guiltYour play-time check-up page (nothing on the Solo Channel).
/pokedexThe Book of Demons, by its nickname.
/elementThe element training wheel.
/battlelogThe Book of Battles.
/colorsThe Book of Colors, where the nineteen chat colours are set.

/skinThe skin picker.
/funpakThe FunPak log, which is also the world loader's warning log.
/haloThe Buy Halo Points window.
/tacticsThe Book of Tactics.
/passwordSets or clears a password on this hero's soul file. It is a lock on the file, not an account.
/www.example.org, /http...Opens the address you typed (everything after the slash) in the built-in browser.
/webThe built-in browser at the game's home page.
/gaiea, /earth, /worldThe Book of Gaiea world map (/world is a ReBreather alias).
/news, /forumsThe news or forum page in your web browser, when the game profile has one.
/sayingsOpens your alias.ini in a text editor: a line of the form key=saying makes /key send the saying.
/diaryYour diary for this world, in WordPad, seeded from the world's blank diary the first time.
/missions, /oldmissionsThe Missions book, open or completed.
/trophy, /bagYour trophy bag.
/villagers, /artThe film-strip viewer on the world's monsters folder or its art folder.

World builder's tools

None of these marks the hero. The two that open editors work only in a world-builder session and otherwise say so.

CommandWhat it does
/q quest.txtOpens a world file in the text editor (builder only).
/props, /props 1, /props 2The property editor on monsters, items or spells (builder only).
/versionWorld Version Info: set the version number, build the zip.
/tileArranges the editor windows.
/bkgnd nameChanges the current scene's background picture.
/fx 3, /weather 5Applies a scene window effect or weather, by number.
/path 2.1.0.0.0Overrides every attacker's attack path (? wildcard, -1 all, 0 clears).
/pal 3Forces every recoloured skin through colour table 3; 0 turns it off.
/gender 1Sets your hero's gender, 0 to 3, with no confirmation.
/terrainToggles the terrain overlay on the map.
/shareToggles the share line under the scene win report.
/class 3Prints a summary of class 3 (1 to 89).
/battle, /battle2, /battle3The class-against-class battle simulator: each pairing once, summary lines only, or everything.
/doldrumThe experience-curve report: experience to the next level against peer-monster kills, levels 2 to 99.
/dist 3, /dist -1Monster placement on map 3, or on every map plus the monsters placed nowhere.
/coverageWhich spell effects the world uses.
/tacticsbalanceThe Tactics piece-balance report.
/springy, /springy fileThe soft-body spring demo, with springy.ini or a file you name.
/level x, /seed xDo nothing, on purpose: they were empty in the original too, and are kept so the line is not broadcast.

Sound

CommandWhat it does
/volumeThe volume controls.
/theme 3Plays sound theme 3; 0 goes back to the nearest link's theme.
/wav filePlays a sound effect.
/midi filePlays a tune once.

Diagnostics and curiosities

/fps, /coordToggle the frame-rate and coordinate overlays.
/phist, /presetA histogram of network packets by type, and a silent reset of it.
/packetsThe packet Scope window (a ReBreather alias for /scope, which first needs /ouvrir).
/ouvrir, /peek, /scopeUnlocks two hidden tools until you quit, then toggles them. /peek draws nothing yet.
/pwdPrints the game's working folder.
/math + 12345678901234567890 1A big-number calculator for + - * /.
/failA hundred thousand casts of your selected spell, and how often it fizzled.
/magsA million hits, and how often one was magnificent.

/stupidtestA timing test that prints nothing.
/homeworkThree textbook maths puzzles.
/easter 2027The date of Easter in that year.

ReBreather's own commands

None of these existed in the original client. They are tried after every original spelling, so an original command always wins a tie.

CommandWhat it does
/gossipToggles gossip mode silently, without the tuned-channel check that /g makes.
/monsterinfo 40, /moninfo wolfPrints a monster's table row by number or name. It cannot show the live state of a monster in a running fight.
/mute nameToggles mute on a player, as the player list's MUTE item does (without the diary line that item writes).
/partyJoins the party of the player selected in the player list.
/mix textSends a line on the server's comment channel as name(alias): text. In the original, /mix opened the admin window; that is /admin here.
/soul, /soulsToggles the Soul Diary window and asks the server for soul information.
/color 3Recolours the scene with colour table 3. Development builds only; in a public build the line goes out as chat.
/im serial, /world, /packetsAliases and extensions listed above.

How a line is matched

  1. Case does not matter; /INN is /inn.
  2. The original client's command list is scanned in order and the first match wins. Some entries need the whole line to match (/inn); others match the beginning (/fight 40, /souls).
  3. Then ReBreather's own commands, then the sayings in alias.ini.
  4. Anything left is sent as chat, slash and all. A mistyped command is read by everyone in earshot.
  5. Numbers are read the way C reads them: leading digits count, anything else is zero.
  6. With the matching option turned on, a plain line beginning how do i or how do you opens that help topic instead of being sent.

Not here, or not quite

  • /mic, /nomic and /speech: the voice subsystem is not ported, so these fall through to the sayings file and then to chat.
  • The slash forms /how do i ... are not recognised; only the plain-text lines are.
  • /battle, /battle2 and /battle3 run inside a scene, where the original refused them.
  • /web must be typed exactly (the original accepted any word starting with those three letters); /seance matches as a prefix (the original wanted it exact).
  • /afk does not keep the original's away-since timestamp.
  • /scope opens in every build, but its line for typing a raw packet is compiled out of public builds.
