Server Commands

A ReMix server takes orders in the chat. Players use a handful of commands to find their way about, sign in and run their guild; the people the host trusts use the rest to keep order. This page lists all of them as ReMix understands them, with the rank each one needs.

ReMix with one server running: the Server Info buttons, the player list and the Chat View
ReMix with one server running. The buttons on the left open its settings and its log, hide the player list or the Chat View, and open the command table. A comment sent to the server arrives in the Chat View as USER COMMENT. Click for full size.

Talking to the server

Commands do not go in the ordinary chat line, where they would be tried as the game's own slash commands. They go to the server window: type /admin (or /mix) in the chat box and it opens, and every line you enter there goes to the server, one line every five seconds. For a single line without the window, /mix /list in the chat box sends /list the same way.

A line that begins with a slash (or a backtick) is a command. Any other line is a comment to the host, who may have ReMix show comments to the signed-in admins or echo them back to you. Command names are not case sensitive, and a line that starts /cmd is an old form ReMix no longer accepts. A muted player's lines are dropped unread, commands included.

The Settings window, Server Settings tab
Server Settings decide what becomes of a comment: Echo Comment to Admins, Echo Comment to Users (Sender) and Log Comments to File.

Ranks

Every command and sub-command has a rank. The host grants ranks from the player list in ReMix, and can change what any command needs in ReMix's Admin Command Overrides window, so the ranks below are the defaults.

The Admin Command Overrides window: every command with its rank, description and usage
Admin Command Overrides, from the Admin Commands button: every command, the rank it needs, what it does and how it is typed. The host changes a command's rank here. Click for full size.
RankWho
UserEveryone. The player commands need nothing more.
Game MasterMay kick, mute and quarantine by soul, see who is punished, and send players messages.
Co-AdminAdds bans by soul, kicks by address and the message of the day.
AdminAdds every command by address, the server-wide messages, arena camps and a restart.
OwnerAdds the commands that touch everyone at once, the shutdown and the serial bindings.
CreatorAbove Owner. No command needs it; it exists so the host can rank a creator above the owners.

A player who is not a registered admin and tries a command above their rank is told so, and three such attempts earn an automatic thirty-day ban. A registered admin who has not yet signed in is reminded to /login instead.

Becoming an admin

  1. The host picks you in ReMix's player list while you are connected and chooses a rank. You are told: The Server Host is attempting to register you as an Admin with the server. Please reply to this message with (/register *YOURPASS). The host never sees the password.
  2. You answer /register followed by a password of your choice. Only then is the rank written to the server's user file, beside a salted hash of the password. Nothing is stored for a promotion you never answer, and it is forgotten when you disconnect.
  3. From then on, each time you connect the server asks you to /login with that password before any admin command works. A wrong password disconnects you. Five wrong passwords within ten minutes, from one address or one soul, lock that password out for ten minutes, and every connection from the address is dropped.

A server with a password of its own greets you with Password required: Please reply with (/login *PASS) or be disconnected, and the same /login answers it, with the same lockout.

Targets, durations and reasons

Commands that act on a player take a target: soul and the soul's serial number as the player list shows it (soul 12345, or the hexadecimal form), ip and an address (ip 203.0.113.9), or all for everyone on the server. all needs Admin rank or better on top of the command's own rank, except for /msg. The server refuses to act on you yourself or on an admin of your rank or higher, and says so: Unable to issue the command [ ... ] on the User [ ... ]. The User may be offline or another Remote Administrator.

A duration is a number and a unit: 30s, 10m, 2h, 7d or 1y, and they chain (1d12h). A bare number is seconds. Whatever follows the duration is the reason, shown to the player and written in the server's log; leave it out and it reads No Reason!.

Finding your way

CommandRankWhat it does
/help, /help ban, /help ban soulUserWhat a command or sub-command does and how to type it. Alone, it describes itself.

/ping, /ping soul 12345, /ping ip 203.0.113.9User; by soul Game Master; by address AdminYour own ping, or another player's.

Signing in

CommandRankWhat it does

/logoutGame MasterSigns you out until your next /login, and makes you visible again if you had vanished.

Keeping order

Kicks, mutes, quarantines and bans tell the player who did it and why: Remote-Admin [ your serial ] has [ Banned ] you until [ date ]. Reason: [ ... ]. Mutes and bans are written to the server's user file with their expiry, so they outlast a restart; a quarantine lasts the session.

CommandRankWhat it does

Camps

A camp is a player's scene on the server. Its owner says who may enter it.

CommandRankWhat it does
/campUserAlone, reports whether your camp is locked and who is allowed past the lock.
/camp lock, /camp unlockUserLocks your camp to everyone you have not allowed in, or unlocks it.
/camp allowcurrent, /camp allowallUserUnlocks it only for the players on the server now, or for everyone who comes later as well.
/camp allow soul 12345, /camp remove soul 12345UserLets one player past the lock, or takes that leave away again.
/camp status soul 12345UserListed in the command table for the state of a player's camp, but ReMix answers it with nothing yet; ask with /camp alone.
/camp unlock soul 12345AdminAny sub-command above with a player named after it works on that player's camp, over the owner's choice.
/camp open, /camp close 2, /camp listAdminOpens an arena camp where you stand on the map, closes one (your latest when no number is given), or lists every open arena camp and who is in it.

Guilds

A server keeps its own guilds, in a file beside ReMix, so a guild founded on one server exists there alone. They are not the guilds of this site's Guild Hall. Joining one takes an invitation and then a password of your own, which you give again with /guild login each time you connect; nearly every other guild command wants that login first.

CommandRankWhat it does
/guild create nameUserFounds a guild with you as its owner. Set your guild password next.
/guild invite soulUserMakes a one-time code for that player, good for ten minutes. Pass it to them yourself; the server does not.
/guild join name codeUserJoins the guild named, with the code made for you. Then set your password.
/guild register password, /guild login passwordUserSets your own guild password, once, after founding or joining: four characters at least. Login gives it again each time you connect; too many wrong tries and the server makes you wait.
/guild leaveUserLeaves your guild. An owner who leaves passes it to another member, or disbands it when no one is left.
/guild kick soulUserRemoves a member. Owners only.
/guild infoUserThe guild's name, its owner and its members.
/guild messageUserAnything else is guild chat to the members who are on.

The server itself

CommandRankWhat it does
/shutdown, /shutdown 5mOwnerStops the server after a countdown, thirty seconds when none is given, and warns the players.
/shutdown stopOwnerCancels a countdown.
/restart, /restart 5m, /restart stopAdminThe same, but the server comes back.
/bind show 12345, /bind clear 12345, /bind set 12345 fingerprintOwnerA ReBreather player's serial number is bound to their identity when they sign in here. Show tells you which; clear forgets it, so their next ReBreather login binds afresh; set binds it to the fingerprint the player reads out to you, eight groups of four hex digits.

Where ReMix differs from the old server

  • /chrules and /chsettings are in the table but switched off: rules and settings change in the ReMix window only, and /list never shows them.
  • The /cmd line of the server window used its own packet, which ReMix no longer reads. Type the command itself.
  • A promoted serial number is nothing until /register has set its password, and a rank in the user file with no password counts as User.
