Getting Started
Windows
- Download. Get the newest build from Downloads. It is a single zip with the game and ReMix inside.
- Unzip to its own folder, for example
C:\Games\ReturnToTheWell. AvoidProgram Files: the game keeps your saves and settings beside the program. - Run
ReBreather.exe, the game's program (ReBreather is the engine it runs on). Windows may warn about a new download. Choose More info, then Run anyway, only for zips you downloaded from this site. - Make a soul and pick a world.
- Go online. Open the server list and join a server, or start your own with Make New Server (see Host a Server).
Linux (x86-64)
You need a 64-bit Linux desktop running X11 or Wayland, with glibc 2.39 or newer: Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, Linux Mint 22, Debian 13, or a current Fedora or Arch.
Install from your distribution first: libxcb-cursor0 on Ubuntu, Mint and Debian,
xcb-util-cursor on Fedora and Arch.
- Download. Get the newest Linux build from Downloads: the
.tar.gz, with the game and ReMix inside. - Extract it into a folder you can write to, for example in your home folder:
tar -xzf ReBreather-<version>-linux-x86_64.tar.gzmakes aReBreatherfolder. The game keeps your saves and settings beside the program, and will not start in a folder it cannot write to. - Run
./ReBreatherfrom that folder. - Make a soul and pick a world.
- Go online. Open the server list and join a server, or start your own with Make New Server (see Host a Server).
More worlds
The game's New Worlds window lists the community catalogue and installs a world in one step. Each world is checked against the fingerprint the catalogue publishes before it is installed. You can also browse the Worlds page.
Updating
Download the new build and unpack it into a new folder (unzip it on Windows, tar -xzf on Linux),
then copy your Save folder across.
